will action void a license?

I'm having trouble with draging and dropping. I can't drag more than one item at a time and when I try more they scatter. Can I reinstall my disk without causing a problem with my license? (MC14) I really don't know what I'm doine with my request. "It says to choose file" and asks for categories and something aboyt tags. Where are these things explained.

Not sure what you mean by reinstalling your "disk". If you plan to reformat your complete harddisk and reinstall all, beginning with the operating system, there are some things to consider.

You should in any case make a backup of your license file. This file usually is named license.dat and can be found in a subdirecty ("licenses") of Mathcads installation directory. In MC14 there where at least two different ways the license file was bound to your computer.

1) the old one: The license file is bound to the volume serial of your primary hard disk. This is NOT the volume label but a number which is created randomly when the disk is formatted. You see it at the top when you use the "dir" command in a console - its looks something like 82B3-57A4. If you reformat your disk this number changes and Mathcad will refuse to work, even if you copy the backup license file in place after reinstallation. There are utilities out there which can change that drive serial to anything you like, So write down the serial befor you reformat the disk and later use any of those utility programs to change the serial to the old value.

2) the way used by newer version also: The license file is bound to the MAC address of one of the NICs in your machine. If this is the case you simply need to provide Mathcad with the old license file and it should be up and running again.

If you don't backup your license file or anything else goes wrong, you need to contact PTC support and I guess you will need some kind of proof of purchase (probably the product code you got on purchase and used for first time installation). I am absolutely not sure about that, but I think to remember that single user licenses could be installed twice with the same product code, academic licenses only once.

?????? Are you talking about the forum system itself? You have to be aware that this is not an official PTC support forum but a user driven platform. You can get help about using this forum if you click NEED HELP? in upper right corner (http://communities.ptc.com/docs/DOC-1157). There is also a group where general forum matters can be discussed http://communities.ptc.com/groups/community-roundup

Often when there is trouble with a program all that is needed is to reload the disk. This appears to be a small problem with the program. I'm not reformating just reloading the disk. I built this computer a few months ago and at that time I got it relicensed and still have the code. After I got the license I tried the program and it seened to work fine. Unfortunately. I didn't try it good enough. When I tried to use it about a week ago I found the problem. I've been using MC since around 1985 and its been great. I've always upgraded until MC14 when I retired in 2005. I'm a Structural Engineer and don't need any better that the MC14. I'm now 81 and use it sporadically. To upgrade at this age seems to be a waste. If there is some kind of upgrade for a nominal fee I'd be interested it that. In all the years I've had MC I doubt I have I have called for advice more than 5 times.

Thanks for your help. Art Fisch, -
