I need to convert an old mathcad .mcd file to the newer .xmcd format.

I have mathcad prime 4.0, but the button to do the conversion is grayed out.

Not a Mathcad user, but can't you just open the .mcd file and do a save as to a .xmcd file format?

This belongs in the Mathcad forum.

But provided you are up to date on maintenance then you also should have access to version 15 which will convert the files.

With a license of Prime you can install and use Mathcad 15 .
Mathcad 15 will open your .mcd file and be able to save it as .xmcd.

Mathcad 15 is required to convert to prime's .mcdx file format.
