Assembly mode -- pointer line from surface to surface

If one uses option "prehighlight NO" in the config.pro file, the pre-select highlight is turned off completely, but with it the dotted line that follows the cursor is also turned off.
Sometimes, to have that dotted line active and showing is very useful, reminding one (in the case of many small adjacent surfaces) where is the originating surface.
Question: is there a way to keep the pre-select highlight OFF, but still have that dotted line active?

Just to be clear, I am talking about the broken green line (that follows the mouse pointer) in the attached screen shot.
