Thanks again to everyone for the help attempts; after discussing it with
James Weed, I decided to delete the part, freeze or suspend all other
components and patterns, re-assemble to default placement and redefine.
Seems to be working well.
BTW - the reason I was able to suppress without others is that I had
previously replaced the component with a copy, then replaced the copy with
the original component, in hopes that I'd be able to do something with it.
After I erased that version from memory and reopened it, it behaved as
expected.

And strangely enough, I can suppress the component without suppressing any
others, even though the next component is constrained to features in the one
I'm suppressing??

Oops - it does have default datums, they were just not the first features,
so I didn't see them at first. Any more ideas?

Tom Peterek and Iain Lewis got it in one: no default datum planes, so it
can't be redefined. Aargh.
Thanks to all who replied!

Good morning:
Does anyone know why I might not be able to edit the definition of the first
part of an assembly? When I right click after selecting this component, Edit
Definition isn't in the menu. I've tried to clean all read-only features,
but the system says there are none to clean. I need to find out how this
part was assembled.
Thanks in advance...
