Textures and Inserts in drawings

Hello Pro/E (Creo) Users,

I am looking to see how people are calling out the different textures in plastic parts and also the locations of inserts in themolds. Currently we are creating surfaces and coloring them to show where the different textures are and using curves to show the size, shape and location of the inserts we want in the molds. With this method we are controlling what is seen in different views by hiding and unhiding the desired layers of the view where we want to show this info. This can be a pain and can be confussing adding new layers and taking surfaces off the defaultALL SURFACES layerand thenputting them on thenew TEXTURE layers. See the attached PDF that shows an example of these different colored surfaces.

I'm looking for suggestions for a better way of defining these textures and insert locations in our drawings.

Thanks,

We use a projected curve onto the surfaces that need textures. We still run into the issue with layers and hiding, but this seems to work for us.

This is an area where I believe PTC could leverage "split surface" technology. This would allow the user to score the surfaces creating additional surface patches.

This technology is similar to "sketched offset" without requiring an offset value.

Hi Mark,
We use a mix of curves on surfaces and coloured surfaces to show what we
want in the tools we get made. We do not use the coloured surfaces in our
drawings though; we have separate Word documents that detail texture,
polish etc. which use the colours.

That said I was caught by your comment "This can be a pain and can be
confussing adding new layers and taking surfaces off the default ALL
SURFACES layer and then putting them on the new TEXTURE layers. See the
attached PDF that shows an example of these different colored surfaces."
Sounds like you do not use the ISOLATE command in Layers. It is not on the
RMB for Layers (a travesty) and since WF it is buried in
View> Visibility >Isolate. We have a config.win to make the icon available
all the time.
As with pretty much everything LAYER it is Glenn Beer who is the guru. His
Layers presentation back in 2007 really fired up many folk in their use and
I am one of those. That presentation is around on the web but if needed I
can send it to you.
I will send you a separate email with a screen shots showing our setup.

The guts of it is you do not have to remove surfaces from your catchall
Layer so you can use them in other Layers which you want to control for
other purposes. Hugely powerful but not well taught by PTC (or at least
anything I have seen).
