extracting surfaces from solid geometry

Does anyone know of a way to simply extract a set of surfaces from a solid part?

I'll ulitimately export this set of surfaces to be used in other software, so even if I could write a .stp file which only had surface geometry, that might work.

thanks in advance for any help.

You could try to create a generic assembly and assemble the main part. Next, create a new part "in the assembly" and assemble it to default location. Next, activate the new "surface only model" and then select the surfaces from the main part in the assembly. Actually selecting the surfaces from the main part can be a bit tricky, but stick with it. Once you have the first surface selects, then use the Windoze CTRL-C (copy) and then CTRL-V (paste) to copy the desired surfaces from the main part to the surface only part.

Hi Gregory
Copy the surfaces you want
Create a publish geom
create a new part
create a copy geom that copies the publish geom from the original part
Save the new part as an iges, step file or whatever format you need

Ya know...for all the mystery that seems to loom around this
functionality, I like the way Mike sums it up in 5 lines.

Don't forget the 'Solid Surfaces' option:

Select the first anchor surface, RMB, Solid Surfaces (all surfaces selected), Crt+C, Crtl+V

Bob, Can you expand on the Surface Only Model function - can't find any reference to it. Are you changing the properties of the newly created model in the .asm?

Cheers, Sean
