renaming files without messing up assembly

Can anyone tell me whether or not there is a way of changing the names of the parts in an assembly without breaking the assembly? Is there a way, for example, within assembly mode to change the names of the parts so that the .prt files get new names while the assembly recognizes the new names? I hope my question is clear.

Open the full assembly, as well as any drawings that reference the parts. Then from the assembly find the part in the model tree, right click and open the file. Now rename it and return to the assembly. SAVE. The assembly should now show the new name, as well as the drawings. Basically, everything needs to be open in memory when you change the name.
