WEBCAST Q&A

Question from Anonymous:  What does the X stand for, in DFX?

Answer:  DFX stands for Design for eXcellence but also Design for "X".  The X can stand for many aspects of the design process.  Design for Manufacturing, Design for Durability, Design for Cost, Design for Reuse, Design for Service, and more.  The whole concept of DFM has expanded over the years, therefore, X has been incorporated within the name to accommodate different aspects.

Question from Anonymous:  How much can I rely on cost analysis by this tool vs actual part cost from a vendor?  Like 80% or 90%?

Answer:  The cost add on is geared towards providing cost guidance to the design engineer.  Highlighting the areas where costs can be avoided and improvements can be made, while also providing a full cost of the model.  The cost database can be set up and configured per your own manufacturing capabilities.  Therefore, providing an actual cost base on setup.  However, the solution is not a cost solution used by procurement teams as there are certain aspects of the mechanical design that are not incorporated in this cost solution.
