Strategies for Conflicting CAD Document "Names"

Hello,

We have been forcing Filename and Number uniqueness in our PDMLink system (10.1) but as you can imagine, this can get to be a headache when pulling in files from external sources, not so much the first time (just rename) but as those objects are refreshed from those external sources. We are considering a few options to handle this differently such that we can retain the originator's name for the object and yet satisfy uniqueness for Windchill and Creo (...).

I'd really like to get some short summaries of how other folks are handling this. What strategies have you used?

Thank you!

We have 2 ways of dealing with this.

First one: import external files into a workspace, then rename appending a suffix for each external source. If file is new to PDMLINK it's Ok. If it is in PDMLink already we can update it. We should reuse contents of objects we plan to check in later, download the others.

Second way: create your own version, externally equivalent of the foreign data. Then this data has to be maintained manually. This is usually good when external data consists of complex assemblies that can be replaced by simpler geometry.

Hope this helps
