Gather mill volume

Hello,

Is there an easy way to gather a mill volume on a part shown below. I have programmed it now with a mill window and use a rough sequence as shown in the second picture. I can't get the gather mill volume to work. I ask myself often the question which option for milling these sort of pockets is the best way to program. Use a rough or a volume rough. While I cannot get this working its difficult to compare it. i have attached the model for those who can help me

Paul

Hello Paul,

gather mill volume should work with this pocket:

  1. Keep default (in Gather Steps menu) and select Done
  2. Select Surf & Bnd > Done
  3. Click any of the inner surfaces, then the top surface and Done Refs > Done/Return
  4. In Closure menu select All Loops > Done, then select the top surface again and Done/Return
  5. If you do Show Volume now, it should already highlight in magenta
  6. After Done it should look like this:

Hello Gunter,

You're right, it works this way. Thanks again.

Which one do you prefer for machining a pocket like this. A rouging or a volume rouging?

Best regards,

Paul

I have no general preference. The main differences:

The volume milling is the old, traditional method, which is probably allowing more direct manipulating, called "customization". Still prefered by many, when it comes to optimizing the toolpath.

The roughing function is designed to be more autonomous and quickly create acceptable toolpath just based on the settings. And it is more applicable for high speed milling.
